Dog Eat Dog World — To All the Dogs That Went to Space
In 1957, Soviet Russian scientists picked a stray dog off the street to be the first animal to orbit the Earth. While the initial story was that Laika died through euthanisation 6 days into orbit from oxygen depletion, it was revealed only in 2002 that malfunctions during the launch meant the thermal control system could not operate correctly. Laika had as a matter of fact, died within hours from the launch from overheating. In the first place, it was never expected that she should return to Earth alive.
Throughout the 50s and 60s, the Soviet space programme continued to send over 50 dogs to space, most of which survived. This is dedicated to all the space dogs that travelled further than any of us could ever hope to in our lifetimes.
